Ningshine: LED Display Contrast Ratio

As we all know, refresh rate, grayscale, and contrast ratio are crucial parameters for LED displays, directly impacting their quality and display effect. Contrast ratio is one of the key parameters of display image quality. The higher the contrast ratio, the clearer the image and the more vibrant the colors. So, what is contrast ratio? And what role does it play in LED displays?

The meaning of contrast ratio in LED displays

Concept: Contrast ratio refers to the ratio of the brightness of an LED display screen at its brightest (white) state to its darkest (black) state. The contrast ratio of an LED display screen is measured in units of “:1”.

Formula: Contrast Ratio = Maximum Screen Brightness / Minimum Screen Brightness

For example, if an LED display screen has a maximum brightness of 10,000 nits and a minimum brightness of 2 nits, then its contrast ratio is 10,000:2 = 5,000:1. Therefore, this means the brightness of the bright areas is 5,000 times that of the dark areas.

Types of contrast ratio

Typically, the contrast ratio of an LED display screen is measured by two parameters: static contrast ratio and dynamic contrast ratio.

Static contrast ratio: This refers to the ratio of a display screen’s maximum brightness to its minimum brightness at different levels. Therefore, static contrast ratio usually takes a numerical form, such as 2000:1 or 5000:1. The measurement standard is under completely dark conditions.

Dynamic contrast ratio refers to a display’s ability to automatically adjust its brightness in different scenarios to achieve higher contrast. For example, when displaying a dark scene, dynamic contrast ratio can reduce backlight brightness, thereby increasing the depth of blacks. In other words, high contrast ratio provides a more vivid picture, especially when viewing high dynamic range (HDR, HDR10+) content.

Why is contrast ratio so important for LED displays?

Contrast ratio means that the richer the gradation from black to white on an LED screen, the clearer and more three-dimensional the displayed image. Therefore, a high contrast ratio means the screen can present more detail and deeper blacks. As a result, LED displays have become an indispensable visual medium in rental event, advertising, conferences, exhibitions, and other fields.

  1. Color Performance: High-contrast LED displays can make colors more vibrant, saturated, and realistic. They can better reproduce the colors of the real world and provide a more vivid visual experience.
  2. Clarity and sense of depth: Contrast determines the clarity of an image. Undoubtedly, the higher the contrast, the clearer the details and outlines of the image. Especially details in dark areas, which are clearly presented and not blurred.
  3. Readability: High-contrast displays ensure more accurate information delivery under various lighting conditions. Even in bright outdoor light, high contrast guarantees that text and images remain clearly legible. Furthermore, in business settings where accuracy is paramount, high contrast makes information delivery more precise.

How to improve the contrast of an LED display screen?

LED Chip Quality

LED displays are composed of tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of red, green, and blue LED chips. Therefore, high-quality LED chips offer higher luminous efficiency and contrast. Furthermore, Ningshine uses Nationstar Kinglight LED chips, which are of even higher quality. Additionally, the use of a highly light-shielding black mask reduces ambient light reflection and crosstalk between LED chips, improving black field performance.

Brightness

According to the meaning of contrast ratio, brightness and contrast are closely related. Higher brightness provides the foundation for higher contrast. Therefore, increasing brightness can expand the dynamic range of brightness, thereby improving contrast. It’s important to note that this must be based on good black field performance; otherwise, it will become more glaring and whitening, rather than clearer.

High-performance driver IC

Ningshine employs advanced driver ICs, enabling it to offer not only higher refresh rates (such as 7680Hz) but also higher grayscale levels (such as 16-bit). Furthermore, the high refresh rate reduces visual flicker caused by scan lines, resulting in more stable images when captured by a camera, which indirectly improves the contrast of dynamic scenes.

Adjusting ambient light

By adjusting the ambient light, avoid the LED screen direct facing strong light sources. This reduces interference with the display’s brightness, thereby improving contrast. Specifically, the higher the brightness, the higher the contrast ratio. The lower the brightness, the lower the contrast ratio.

In other words, contrast ratio is an indispensable part of LED display technology, giving each image a sense of depth. With Ningshine’s continuous innovation in LED technology, we have every reason to believe that Ningshine’s future LED displays will bring us an even more stunning visual experience.
